Our Mission

THE MISSION OF OCAB COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY, INC.

 IS TO ELIMINATE THE CAUSES AND CONDITIONS OF

POVERTY IN THE SERVICE AREA BY DEVELOPING STRATEGIES TO ENSURE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR DISADVANTAGED AND UNDERSERVED RESIDENTS.

OCAB develops and focuses resources to:

  • Attack the causes of poverty by helping low income families and individuals acquire the skills, knowledge and opportunities needed to become self-sufficient;
  • Alleviate the conditions of poverty  by helping people meet basic and emergency needs;
  • Foster social and economic development in Orangeburg, Calhoun, Allendale and Bamberg Counties

Founded in 1966, OCAB is a private, nonprofit corporation which serves more than 19,000 individuals and families each year, with average annual funds of $7 million received from government and private sources. Public officials, the poor and community organizations are equally represented on the agency's governing Board of Directors, and all sectors of the community are involved in program planning, evaluation and coordination. Neighborhood Service Centers in Bowman, Holly Hill, St. Matthews, Bamberg, Neeses, Denmark and Allendale link rural residents to needed resources.

The agency promotes housing and economic development through its sister organization, the OCAB Community Development Corporation, which operates the Ujima Village Apartments for the elderly  and disabled in Bamberg.

OCAB Community Action Agency, Inc. is "Linked for Action" to help meet needs in our communities, and achieve equality, dignity and opportunity for the disadvantaged.
