Prevention Department

OCAB CAA's Prevention Department focuses on Youth Enrichment and Leadership. The emphasis is empowering students between the ages of 13-18 to grow into successful contributing members of our community by building character, providing academic support and imparting essential life skills. Students who complete the program will be able to describe how good character will aid in meeting their goals and building healthy relationships.  Students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, decision making and problem solving skills.

Through collaborations with local agencies, the nationally recognized Prevention Program also sponsored volunteer youth and young adults from ages 13 to 21, who provide peer-led health education and risk reduction activities to curb the spread of HIV and pregnancy among teens and young adults. Through workshops in schools, churches and other organizations, one-to-one counseling, distribution of educational materials, dramatization and other activities, the peer educators emphasized “respect and responsibility."

Students must reside in Orangeburg, Calhoun, Allendale or Bamberg counties, and will be able to describe how character aids in the attainment of goals, emotional health and healthy relationships. The YLP provides innovative activities in personal development and character building, leadership skills, educational achievement, career exploration, and civic responsibility.

Applicant households must be income and program eligible. Income eligibility is based on the annual Federal Poverty Levels and is determined by previous thirty (30) days' gross income for the household. Additionally, prospective households must be able to document and establish federal, state and county residency through officially issued IDs.

Enrollment is from January 1 to January 31, of the upcoming year with the program ending on December 31.
